The FIR association was founded in 1953 as an affiliated institute of the RWTH Aachen University. In line with the conceptual model of the “future business enterprise”, the development of business organisation methods and models has been its focus of activities. The institute follows a holistic concept of design and management which has always been characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinarity.
The three fields of activity – Service Management, Information Management and Production Management – carry out research projects geared to both basic science and the requirements of industry and develop practice-oriented solutions for current challenges. The Service Management field of research of the FIR has been established in German services research for more than 15 years and has had a substantial influence on the development of the service engineering discipline in this period. The FIR is characterised by an increasingly international position in research projects, publications, international panels and research groups. The institute opened the Service Science InnovationLab (SSIL) in summer 2010 in order to be able to further develop the innovation management for complex service systems in an interdisciplinary and interactive mode.
In the context of e-mobility, the FIR has addressed the subjects of electric vehicle production and the development of business models and ICT services for spreading intelligent e-mobility for a long time already and is able to benefit from comprehensive knowledge and many partners in industry and research. There is a need for developing new business models for e-mobility that combine services and products efficiently. Within the development of convergent ICT services, the integration of e-mobility into the Internet of energy is in the focus. The solutions of intelligent e-mobility are being tested in a field test in the Aachen showcase region.
